On Friday, June 27, at 9 a.m. at the Chinook Landing Marina, along the Hylebos Waterway in north Tacoma, reporters can experience a U.S. Geological Survey research project that is currently underway in the Puget sound between Olympia and Whidby Island.

Following a dockside briefing on Puget Lowlands earthquake hazards, reporters and photographers will board the Robert Gray for a demonstration cruise in Commencement Bay and Dalco Passage. During the cruise, scientists from the USGS will discharge small air guns that are towed behind the ship, and display images of the seafloor and sub-surface as they are compiled from the digital recordings of reflected sound waves.

The two-three-hour cruise will allow plenty of time for reporters to acquire still and video footage and to interview the participating scientists and technicians. The ship will return to Chinook Landing at approximately noon.

Reservations for the demonstration cruise are not necessary, but all reporters and photographers should be at the Chinook marina by 9 a.m., and should be prepared to spend a maximum of three hours on board ship.

The USGS serves the nation by providing reliable scientific information to describe and understand the Earth; minimize loss of life and property from natural disasters; manage water, biological, energy, and mineral resources; and enhance and protect our quality of life.
