A cooperative agreement with the University of Southern California (USC) for the operation of the Southern California Earthquake Center has been renewed by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The center is charged with educating the public about earthquake activity in southern California through activities such as a public real-time seismic data center, an educational outreach program for high school and elementary school students, and workshops for professors of engineering and seismology. Through these efforts, USC and USGS scientists carry out comprehensive data collection and public outreach efforts in support of earthquake research.

The $1.1 million award provides for continuation of these research, outreach, and public information services for March 1997 - March 1998 with planned annual funding through January 2002. Since 1991, the USGS has obligated more than $7 million in support of this local center.

The USGS serves the nation by providing reliable scientific information to describe and understand the Earth; minimize loss of life and property from natural disasters; manage water, biological, energy, and mineral resources; and enhance and protect our quality of life.
