BIBLIOGRAPHY OF REPORTS BY U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY AUTHORS ABOUT THE WATER RESOURCES OF WYOMING

USGS INFORMAL BOOK AND MAP SERIES

Open-File Reports

The practice of assigning numbers to open-file reports prior to releasing the reports began in 1974, although not all reports released during 1974 were assigned numbers. Since then, numbers have been assigned retroactively to most open-file reports released before 1975.

Prior to about 1974, most interpretive water-resources reports were published as Water-Supply Papers, Hydrologic Investigations Atlases, Circulars, or unnumbered open-file reports. From 1974 to 2003, interpretive reports were published as Water-Resources Investigations Reports (Scientific Investigations Reports, beginning in 2004) or in one of the formal report series (Water-Supply Papers, Hydrologic Investigations Atlases, Circulars, or Professional Papers). Most non-interpretive water-resources reports (mainly reports of hydrologic data) are published as open-file reports or in the annual Water-Data Report series.

The open-file series also was used for interim release of formal-series reports while the formal-series reports were in press. These reports received dual approval for publication by the Director, USGS. When the formal-series version was published, the open-file version automatically was superseded, and all copies were to be destroyed. Not all were, however, and superseded open-file reports still appear on library shelves and occasionally are cited in new reports. Also, superseded open-file reports that are numbered are included in the Survey's primary database for searching for bibliographic citations of USGS reports, the Publications Warehouse, and are included in the listing below, with links to the corresponding formal-series report.

Unnumbered Open-File Reports

Most open-file reports published before the practice of numbering began have been assigned numbers retroactively. The numbers may not appear on public-inspection, library, and archive copies of the reports unless they have been added by hand. Reports assigned numbers after they were published are included in the list of numbered open-file reports that follows. Open-file reports that have not yet been assigned numbers are listed below, but are not listed in  Publications Warehouse.
